BAIKUNTHEE : REVIEWED BY RAJNI CHHABRA
BAIKUNTHEE
While translation is generally perceived as a conversation between two languages, it can also be, in certain contexts, a conversation between two eras between the past and present.
Baikunthee is brain child of literary icon Dev Kishan Rajpurohit Ji. He is well established identity in literary corridors of Rajasthani as well as Hindi and has several accolades to his credit on state as well as National level.
This Fiction of writer is responsive to the societal currents of his time as well as the need for reformation in context of present scenario.
In 'Baikunthee', the writer presents an impressively diverse cast of characters caught up in both ordinary and extra ordinary situations. His imagination goes wherever life happens; villages, rural life, customs, rituals, obsolete traditions, household, disputes and fractions in family, business trends, corruption, self employment, dowry system, re- marriage of widows, concern for purity of environment, plantation of trees, curbing water pollutions etc. Reformative measures have been implemented by the protagonist in this story, seeking good will of the villagers and involving them in process,
Story of 'Baikunthee' revolves around accidental death of a very rich, dishonest Seth and multiple rituals associated with his obituary and all sorts of pomp and show associated with his Baikunthee. His worthy son accomplishes all the rituals under expert guidance of 5 Elderly Wise- men, Pandits and Nai of the village, but ultimately declares that no such rituals should be performed after his death.
A curiosity continues till the end of fiction, that where will he be sheltered after departure from this world...in hell or in heaven. as he has been breaking traditions and refuting long prevalent customs.
Diverse sub-plots are perfectly interwoven in this capturing fiction. Readers get acquainted with rural scenario as each and every custom and ritual is described elaborately.
Trans-creation of ' Baikunthee' from Rajasthani into English will prove a great link with voracious readers on global level. It will prove a mile stone to cross geographical boundaries.
The translator, in her maiden venture of translation has proved her worth and put her best efforts to retain soul of the original work. Wishing her all the best for glorious success!
