Aa kurlawe: Rajasthani poem by Shakuntala Sharma English version: Rajni Chhabra
SHE WRIGGLES
***************
You are father
You are husband
You are brother
You are saviour of woman
And you
In role of sun
Without wasting a minute, say
What have you done for me
Giving birth to me is not a
Big deal
In role of brother
Very easily say
Go to your home
What are you doing here
And father
He simply sells her away
Poor mothers just sees this
Nobody is aware of it
Nobody comes to know about it
He sells it, but
Names this deal as
*Kanya-dan
When this helpless creature
Becomes mother
All her bones shudder with pain
As if all her bones are going to crack
Is there any true male
Who comes in front
And praises, saying
"You are the queen
Enhancing our linage."
Instead of
Shunning her away from home
Enthrones her in his heart
But, strangely, he forgets
Sacrifice of the woman
And just focusses on her youth
That poor creature, silently
Nurtures her off-springs
And is cheated daily
Due to her love and
Due to her faith
How long will this trend of
Disregard will continue
When will she secure
Real shelter
Because, she is other name of life
The other name of courage
She is beautiful creation of God
She is mentioned in abuses
She is presented in advertisements
She is mentioned as donation in marriage
But, this donation has been insulted so many times
She has limitlessly tolerated anguish caused by man
She earns for him
Still she gets inferior status
How long will it continue
How long will this continue
Ponder over it
Till how long.....
Who knows
Till when?
kanya-dan : a wedding ritual in which daughter is donated by father
