BOSOM BUDDY: A RAJASTHANI POEM BY SANJU SHRIMALI: ENGLISH TRANSLATION BY RAJNI CHHABRA

 BOSOM BUDDY

O, My bosom buddy!

Come with me

Leaving everything behind

Let us move far from this city

To our native village

Dunes stretched till far

Lucidity of *kakadia-mateera

Vegetable of *Gawarfali and *fofalia

Pouring ghee on * sogra of bajra

*Teej and other festivals

Fairs and gatherings

On auspicious occasions

Lively conversations at *choupal

Affection of companions

Intimacy of strangers too

Sips of * rabardhi

Perhaps

Still, are waiting for us

Pleasant wind

And fragrance of sand

I miss a lot.

*kakadia: vegetation in desert area

Mateera : pulpy juicy fruit in desert

*Gwarfali and fofalia: food crops grown in Rajasthan

*Sogra of bajra: a dish prepared with bajra

* Teej: a festival of females in Rajasthan in monsoon

* Choupal: meeting place in village

* Rabardhi: a traditional Rajasthani dish prepared with buttermilk and bajra
