IS IT PLAIN SAILING?: ENGLISH VERSION OF RAJASTHANI POEM OF SUNDAR PARAKH: TRANSLATOR: RAJNI CHHABRA

SUNDAR PARAKH

IS IT PLAIN-SAILING?
**********************

Leaving behind
Hut in his own village
Leaving behind younger brother
In lap of mother
Moved in bus
Reached our home
For livelihood
Exhausted after whole day's work
Sat outside to have plateful of meals
Asked her on mobile
Is everything okay overthere?
Has Nainu slept?
Now I will have meal
Pay my regards to father
I will send money
After completion of month
Till then....
Okay
Disconnecting phone.
And starts having meal
For re-charging phone
Spent a hundred Rupees
Means, it will be due upon me
Eighteen years old elder brother
Matures very early
Leaving behind two brothers
And ailing father
In care of mother
In village
Came to our house
For livelihood
How much plateful
We might serve him
He gobbles it down
Only after chatting with mother
Then only satiety follows
Departing from native-soil is
Very hard
Leaving behind
Playful ways of childhood
Is it plain sailing ?
